The Nieuport 17

Out Thousands of Nieuport's were built during the War Only one Surviving Ni17 exists today, restored by the Brussels' Army Museum.
The Nieuport was a classic "marques" during a period extending from 1915 to 1917.
It evolved from the Nieuport 10 Two seater. The Single seat 80 hp Fighter was designated the Nieuport 11. A 110 hp version was designated the Nieuport 16. Both had a 13 meter wing span.
The added weight of the heavier Engine necessitated a re-design and a 15 meter wing Span Nieuport 17 was the result. Variants continued with different power plants and configurations. Nearly every French Escadrille at one time saw them in Service.
These French Fighters were not only Operated by the French and Lafayette Escadrille, but by the Belgians, and British, as well as Captured German Aircraft from which developed the Siemens-Schuckert D.I. . They were also built under License and operated by both the Russians and Italian's Macchi-Built Nieuport's.
